“Im still in the city” photo series October 23rd 2023 . Photography & set design by Alex Douglas

This photo series, “I’m Still In The City”, is a window into the insecurity and impermanence of housing/home for young people in major cities while trying to self actualize their lives. In major cities we continue to find less and less accessible housing options right now changing the relationship young people have with their identity. To stay in the city is to endure impermanence while becoming who you are. The impermanence of spaces we traditionally call “home” while simultaneously pursuing growth, full lives, in those same spaces creates a disconnect. Because of this uncertainty, impermanence, we can only invest in ourselves as individuals and our community to truly feel at home.

These photos explore traditional home apartment style set ups/spaces covered and bound in layers of white fabric to alienate the person living within. Without walls there is a sense of openness, emphasizing the lack of infrastructure to housing leaving an individual “nomadic” lifestyle as a resort for young people. People are expected to pack up and move at a moments notice in cities where landlords can create new rules and housing insecurity on a whim. The space will never feel truly personal or permanent. Through renting, the space will never truly belongs to you. The subjects in the photos stand out beyond their environment, in their unique styles, symbolizing the only thing they really have control of in this life is how we try to show up, express ourselves & our intentions in this life. The spaces are constantly changing, replaceable and only a temporary part of our journey.
